Great Blue Heron, Great Egret

Big birds. A bunch of both hang around the Water Ranch.

Lovebirds checking a Saguaro

Roomy, has a nice view, maybe just what we're looking for. What's the rent? That much, huh? In this market?!

(Peach-faced Lovebirds. Feral birds that are doing okay around Phoenix.)

Water Ranch

My birding class did a field trip to the Water Ranch and some other ponds in the Gilbert/Chandler area, and we spent hours looking at everything from sparrows to herons to woodpeckers. This is an American Coot.

Coyote, Usery Pass

Saturday I did a short hike (Vista trail) and spotted this coyote trotting along a wash. I saw where it was going to cross the path ahead of me, so I lined up this picture. The sun had been up about a half hour...

Inca Doves

These were taking the sun on our wall. I'm starting a birding class, and have a new camera. You have been warned! :D

New camera, new mountain for me

This weekend I took my new Canon S5 out for a very short spin. I was out and about and stopped by the Phoenix Mountain Park, both at Dreamy Draw and at the Squaw Peak trailhead.

The next three are of Piestewa (AKA Squaw) Peak, taken from the parking lot just north of the trailhead. The first is with no zoom at all.

The next one is of the peak, using the zoom. See the saguaros on the ridgeline? The next photo focuses specifically just below that area.

The last is a full 48X optical plus digital zoom. I wasn't using a tripod, either, and the image through the viewfinder was shaking all over the place.
