Sailboats in the channel


Returning to San Diego, we passed these pretty little boats.

Elephant seals, seal lions, and sedamentary rocks

South island harbors a rookery for elephant seals, though if you can tell them from the sea lions in this picture, you have better eyes than I.

The islands themselves thrust very abruptly out of the sea, and you can see the upheaval that put them there in the way the rocks are warped, cracked and crushed in places.

The west side of North Island is dotted with California sea lions.

North tip of North Island

This is the northernmost tip of the Coranado Islands (or the Islas Coronado), and are Mexican territory.

Grey whale

San Diego in the background. Grey whale hump and spout nearer.
The fluke is visible below. We've seen about six greys altogether and so far that's about as much as we've seen of any of them. A couple have been closer, but I've not been able to get a good picture of those...
